Heart disease has been long known as a common cause of death. Men are stereotypically prone to this disease. However, in reality women are also vulnerable to heart disease, especially after experiencing menopause.

Heart attack and stroke are the cause of death in one of three Singaporean women. This figure is eight times larger than breast cancer, which is often associated as women’s greatest disease. Two surveys that were conducted by Singapore heart foundation showed that less than 10% of women (8% in 2006 and 9% in 2009) know this.

The same survey was also revealed that only 12% who consulted a doctor about the risks of heart attack. This means that the rest did not know or even did not care about the risks of heart disease.

In contrast to men, women tend to experience symptoms that are not normally found in heart disease. This causes delay in treatment, which ultimately leads to worse heart condition.

This is why women are more susceptible to heart attack.

A study was recently carried out by the Singapore Cardiac Data Bank to investigate differences in heart disease in men and women. The results found that women who were hospitalized due to heart disease were generally 10 years older than men, and were more susceptible to other conditions such as depression, increased heart rate, and pain in the chest that are usually not associated with heart disease.

So women, what can you do to prevent heart disease?

Some women describe it as if a very heavy object is pressing their chest. Pain in other body parts such as arms, back, neck, jaw and stomach is also a common symptom of heart attack.

However some women do not experience chest pain but simply are short of breath.

Nausea, sweating and dizziness are also symptoms that should not be ignored. Sometimes, women feel fatigue with no reason or experience epigastric discomfort which is usually regarded as bloating. In fact, fatigue or bloating could be the only sign that heart attack will happen.
