In 2009, Amazing Farm also moved into agoforestry. It has chosen the Sengon (Albiza falcataria) trees for planting on 127 hectare of land, involving round 167,000 trees. It will not stop only on this project, but to expand to other major agro-forestry projects as part of our commitment to contribute preventing the effect of global warming issues.
Reasons for the planting of the Sengon (Albiza falcataria) would include:
- Its faster growth to maturity within 4-5 years, compared to other wood-plants such as 30-50 years for Jati (Tectona grandis).
- Its deep rooting characteristic, to thereby better ensure its ability to benefit from larger quantity of nutrients.
- Its high productivity, because of its ability to sprout and commence a fresh cycle of growing from its stump, after the mature tree has been sawn off.
- Seeds and other vegetative parts of Sengon do also lend themselves to reproduction and multiplication.
Other important things, the plant is extensively planted as a shade and nurse crop for coffee, cocoa, tea, other crops and young timber plantations. Its fast growth and good shading properties outweigh the disadvantages of its sensitivity to strong winds and its relatively short life.
For reclamation purposes, sengon has been established even on tailings left after tin mining. It is planted extensively for reforestation and afforestation of denuded and eroding land.
